ISKF Membership Information

ISKF Barbados is affiliated with the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) which was established under Master Teruyuki Okazaki.

Anyone can join karate at any age and at any time during the year. Our classes are broken up into small groups depending on rank and age.Grading occurs three (3) times a year. This is where you are examined on what you have in order to proceed to the next rank.

Sensei David Jones began his practice of karate in England during the early 1970s. He established his first dojo in 1978 in Newbury, England and has continued to teach ever since. Sensei Jones was fortunate to have trained with Masters Kanazawa and Enoeda before immigrating to Calgary in 1981. Since that time, he has been a staunch supporter and contributor to the International Shotokan Karate Federation and has been a close and personal student of Master Yaguchi.

Sensei Jones represented Canada for many years in competition. He was a kata finalist in the 1990 World Shoto Cup and was Canadian national kumite champion in 1991.... Read More about  Sensei Jones HERE

EVENTS

The ISKF Barbados hosts regular events including beach training fun days, award evenings and fundraising events. As a registered charity the charity events are very important and we wish to thank all of the members, their friends, family and guardians for their continued contributions and support.

We have formed a fundraising committee to oversee the organisation of these events. Read More Here  

TOURNAMENTS

ISKF Barbados have regular Kumite and Kata tournaments throughout the year as well as regular grading events.

These form a very important roll in the advancement of the membership base and are required to reach the next level in Karate

SHOTOKAN KARATE PROFILE

GARRY TURNBULL – BSc., P.E., HACHIDAN (8TH. Degree Black Belt)

Member of the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF), a world wide shotokan organization with over 70 countries lead by Master Teruyuki Okazaki, Kudan(10th. Degree), who was taught by Grand Master Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of modern day karate.

· Regional Director of the Northern Caribbean countries

· Chairman/Chief Instructor of The International Shotokan Karate federation –   Jamaica (ISKFJ)

· Member of the Technical Committee (TC) of the International Shotokan           Karate Federation (ISKF).

· Chairman of the TC Oversight sub-committee for the ISKF Trainees                  Instructor Program.

· Class “A” Instructor, examiner, Judge.

· Started Karate in 1968 at the University of Technology (then the College of      Arts Science and Technology)....... More info to come

ISKF Barbados Get Their First Medals at the World Karate Championships in South Africa - 2016 (18th August)

Tajei Greenidge Wins a Gold & a Bronze Medal in the 8/9 Category for Kumite Purple belts (Gold) and Kata (Bronze) - with over 20 nations represented at the championships this is a huge achievement.

HOW DID THEY GET THERE?

ISKF Barbados Get MORE Medals at the World Karate Championships in South Africa - 2016 (19th August)

GOLD MEDAL - Tabu Lall Kissoon

In an epic girls 14 year to 15 year age group, Tabu overcame her opponent with a classic attack to gain the final vital point after a long fought out draw (directly after her titanic semi final victory which included two draws).

An exhausted Tabu gained the second gold for Barbados at these ISKF World Championships in the Kumite final and just missed out on a medal in the Kata Category.

BRONZE MEDAL - Michael Hall

Nine year old Black Belt Michael Hall gained a bronze medal in the 10 - 11 year old division after being moved up a division as there were no competitors in his age group

Michael did not look out of place as he competed with the older boys to gain a bronze in a closely contested Kata final.
